GOVERNMENT PRISON VISITORS 2026 (INDEPENDENT CORRECTIONAL CENTRE VISITOR )

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is inviting applications for the position of Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) at correctional centres across South Africa. This is a contract-based opportunity for individuals who are passionate about community service, human rights, and accountability within correctional facilities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A Grade 12 / Senior Certificate.
  • Basic computer skills with strong attention to detail.
  • A nomination or recommendation letter from a recognised community organisation (issued within the last six months). This document is compulsory.
  • The ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Batho Pele principles and a strong commitment to serving communities.
  • Confidence and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
  • Preference may be given to applicants living close to the correctional centre where the post is available.

Main Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Visit correctional centres daily and interact with inmates as well as correctional officials.
  • Receive, document, and report inmate complaints and concerns.
  • Monitor detention conditions and identify possible human rights violations.
  • Report serious incidents including:
    • Deaths in custody
    • Use of segregation
    • Mechanical restraints
    • Use of force cases
  • Assist JICS officials during inspections and investigations.
