Job Overview

We are currently seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, and customer-focused individual to join our retail team as a Shop Assistant Cashier. This role is essential to ensuring our customers enjoy a smooth, efficient, and friendly shopping experience every time they visit our store.

As a Shop Assistant Cashier, you will be responsible for assisting customers throughout their in-store journey—from finding the products they need to completing their transactions at the point of sale. Your role will require excellent customer service, attention to detail, and a helpful, positive attitude. You will also be responsible for maintaining the store’s neatness and visual appeal, handling payments accurately, and contributing to the store’s overall efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service Excellence
As a frontline representative of the store, you are responsible for greeting customers warmly, assisting them throughout their shopping journey, and making them feel welcome and valued. You will help answer questions, guide customers to products, provide recommendations, and support any customer requests in a timely and professional manner. The ultimate goal is to deliver outstanding service and ensure each customer has a positive experience that encourages return visits.

Transaction Processing
You will be entrusted with accurately ringing up customer purchases at the cash register or point-of-sale system. This includes scanning items, applying discounts or promotions as applicable, and ensuring that all transactions are completed quickly and without error. You must handle various forms of payment, including cash, card, mobile payments, and store credits or vouchers. Accuracy, efficiency, and honesty are crucial to this aspect of the role.

Sales and Product Assistance
Beyond assisting at the till, your role also includes engaging with customers to help them make informed buying decisions. This may include offering advice, sharing product knowledge, or suggesting complementary items. You will help increase sales and basket size by making the customer’s shopping experience easier and more enjoyable.

Telephone and Inquiries
You will respond to customer phone calls with courtesy and professionalism. Whether it’s a product inquiry, a stock check, or a general question, you are expected to handle these interactions efficiently, provide accurate information, and escalate queries to supervisors when needed.

Store Presentation and Merchandising
You are responsible for ensuring that shelves, displays, and promotional areas are well-stocked, neat, and visually appealing. You will help organize merchandise to meet brand standards, rotate stock, replace damaged or expired items, and make sure all products are properly priced and accessible. A clean and attractive store layout enhances the customer experience and encourages sales.

Record Keeping and Customer Information
As part of your duties, you may be responsible for maintaining accurate customer records when capturing details for loyalty programs, promotions, or lay-by systems. Confidentiality and data accuracy are essential when handling customer information.

Collaboration and Teamwork
This is a team-oriented role. You will work closely with your colleagues, managers, and other departments to maintain a positive work environment, achieve sales goals, and support overall store operations. Being cooperative, dependable, and respectful is essential to team success.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the position of Shop Assistant Cashier, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: A Matric / Grade 12 certificate is preferred. Completion of Grade 11 (NQF Level 3) will be considered.

  • Experience: Previous experience in a customer-facing role in retail, sales, or cashiering is advantageous. Experience as a store assistant, sales associate, cashier, or customer service agent will be beneficial.

  • Distance: Must reside within 15 kilometers of the place of employment.

  • Criminal Record: Applicants must have no criminal history.

  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English is essential. The ability to speak additional South African languages is an advantage.

  • Availability: Must be able to work retail hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.

  • Physical Requirements: Must be physically fit to stand for long hours and perform store duties such as restocking and lifting light goods.
