Programme Overview

The Traffic Officer Learnership Programme is a structured training initiative aimed at preparing young South Africans for a professional career in road traffic law enforcement. The programme is offered in partnership with provincial and local government traffic departments and accredited traffic training colleges.

It provides a combination of classroom-based instruction, practical fieldwork, and on-the-job exposure in real traffic environments. Successful learners who complete the programme receive a nationally recognized qualification, equipping them with the foundational knowledge and skills to pursue employment as qualified Traffic Officers.

Programme Objectives

The primary goal of the Traffic Officer Learnership Programme is to:

  • Provide learners with comprehensive training in road traffic legislation, road safety, and law enforcement practices

  • Equip learners with the skills to effectively manage traffic flow, enforce road laws, and handle road incidents

  • Promote discipline, professionalism, and integrity among future traffic officials

  • Create a pipeline of qualified traffic officers ready for potential placement within municipal or provincial departments


Core Training Areas

Learners enrolled in the programme will receive formal instruction and practical training in the following key areas:

  • Road Traffic Legislation and Enforcement
    Understanding and applying road traffic laws and regulations, issuing fines, and executing lawful procedures

  • Communication and Conflict Resolution
    Effective public interaction, managing disputes calmly, and de-escalation techniques

  • Road Safety Education and Public Awareness
    Educating communities about traffic safety practices and encouraging compliance

  • Handling of Road Incidents and Accident Scenes
    Securing accident sites, assisting victims, directing traffic, and reporting incidents

  • Firearm Handling and Physical Training (where required)
    Safe use and management of firearms, along with endurance, fitness, and agility training

  • Administrative Functions
    Compiling reports, logging incidents, processing documentation, and using enforcement databases


Minimum Entry Requirements

To be considered for the Traffic Officer Learnership Programme, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen

  • Have a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification

  • Possess a valid Code B (manual transmission) driving license

  • Be between 18 and 35 years of age

  • Be physically and mentally fit (fitness tests may be conducted)

  • Have no criminal record

  • Be willing to undergo medical assessments, physical fitness tests, and background checks

  • Be willing to be placed at any traffic authority within the designated province or municipality

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements will not be considered.

Ideal candidates should demonstrate:

  • A genuine interest in traffic management and public safety

  • High levels of discipline, responsibility, and integrity

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to remain calm and act decisively under pressure

  • A willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Commitment to completing the entire learnership programme

Note: Completion of the learnership does not guarantee permanent employment. However, it significantly enhances a candidate’s chances of being absorbed into public service or other related industries.

  3. A certified copy of your Grade 12 (Matric) certificate

  4. A certified copy of your valid Code B driver’s license
