Job Summary

We are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented, and customer-focused Barista to join our team. As a barista, you will play a vital role in delivering an exceptional customer experience by preparing and serving high-quality beverages and food items. You will also be responsible for managing the presentation, hygiene, and overall efficiency of the service area, while maintaining company standards.

This role involves more than just making coffee—it requires an enthusiastic individual who understands the importance of customer service, teamwork, and product knowledge. Key Responsibilities

As a barista, your main responsibilities will include a combination of food and beverage preparation, customer service, merchandising, and administrative support. These tasks are critical to the successful operation of the food service department.

1. Beverage Preparation

  • Prepare a variety of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, espresso, cappuccino, tea, and specialty drinks according to standard recipes and customer preferences.

  • Accurately follow customer requests regarding drink temperature, ingredients, and presentation.

  • Operate coffee grinders, espresso machines, blenders, and other beverage-making equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Grind and blend coffee beans to ensure there is always a ready supply of fresh coffee on hand.

2. Food Handling & Service

  • Reheat and prepare grab-and-go food items such as pancakes, wraps, sandwiches (sarmies), and other quick meals as per company guidelines.

  • Present all food items attractively and ensure they meet brand presentation standards.

  • Label packaged food correctly with product name, preparation date, and expiry date as per food safety regulations.

  • Ensure FIFO (First In, First Out) is applied consistently when presenting and rotating stock.

3. Customer Engagement

  • Deliver friendly, helpful, and efficient service to all customers.

  • Engage with customers to promote products and offer suggestions based on their preferences or current promotions.

  • Perform live product demonstrations (wet demos) as required to promote product lines or boost sales.

  • Handle customer queries, requests, and complaints professionally and in a timely manner.

4. POS Operation and Financial Controls

  • Process customer transactions accurately using the point-of-sale (POS) system.

  • Manage till operations, ensuring there are no cash overs or unders by maintaining precision and integrity during cash handling.

  • Maintain accountability for all sales transactions, ensuring they are documented and reconciled correctly.

5. Cleanliness and Hygiene

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation at all times.

  • Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols, including proper food storage, waste disposal, and sanitation practices.

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as wiping down counters, equipment, and maintaining cleanliness in service and preparation areas.

  • Ensure personal hygiene standards are always met, including wearing appropriate uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE).

6. Stock Management and Replenishment

  • Monitor and replenish stock levels of beverages, food ingredients, and disposables as needed throughout the day.

  • Assist in receiving and unpacking deliveries, checking for accuracy, quality, and expiration dates.

  • Record stock usage and inform management of any shortages or overstocking issues.

  • Follow stock rotation procedures to minimize waste and maintain product quality.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Education: A minimum of Grade 10 is required. (Grade 12 is advantageous.)

  • Experience: At least six (6) months of professional experience in a barista or similar coffee-making role is essential.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required. The ability to speak other local languages is a plus.

  • Transportation: Must have reliable personal transport to and from the workplace.

  • Technical Knowledge:

    • Ability to operate coffee and espresso machines

    • Experience with food heating and preparation equipment

    • Familiarity with POS systems (experience with SPAR SIGMA is an added advantage)

  • Compliance:

    • Must have no criminal record or negative credit history (background checks will be conducted)

    • Must be legally eligible to work in South Africa

  • Must be able to work in a team-oriented, customer-facing environment that can become fast-paced during peak hours.
