About the Opportunity

Clover is giving unemployed young South Africans an opportunity to gain practical workplace exposure through two YES Learner positions within its Secondary Distribution Department in Boksburg, Gauteng.

The successful candidates will spend 12 months gaining workplace experience at Clover’s Atlas branches. The programme forms part of the company’s participation in the YES (Youth Employment Service) Programme, which is designed to help young people build practical skills and experience.

Learners will receive exposure to administrative and operational activities linked to distribution. This may include monitoring routes, reviewing driver-related information, working with reports and supporting daily distribution processes.

Who Can Apply?

The opportunity is aimed at unemployed South African youth who meet the stated eligibility conditions.

Applicants must:

  • Be between 18 and 33 years old.
  • Have completed Matric / Grade 12.
  • Be unemployed at the time of application.
  • Not have previously participated in a learnership with another organisation.

The vacancy does not specify previous employment experience as a requirement. Candidates who are entering the workplace for the first time can therefore focus on their qualifications, personal strengths and willingness to learn.

Skills and Competencies

Clover is seeking candidates who can demonstrate qualities that will help them perform effectively in a workplace environment.

These include:

  • Taking initiative and being proactive.
  • A results-focused approach to assigned tasks.
  • The ability to cooperate with colleagues.
  • Good communication.
  • Administrative ability.
  • Motivation and commitment.
  • The ability to work towards shared objectives.
  • A willingness to learn and contribute.

What Will the YES Learners Do?

The learners will support activities associated with Daily Route Management (DRM) and distribution administration.

Their responsibilities may include monitoring planned delivery routes, checking operational information and preparing reports for management.

Monitoring Driver Route Compliance

Learners may assist with checking whether drivers are following their allocated routes as planned.

This can involve monitoring information relating to:

  • Unauthorised stops.
  • Speeding incidents.
  • Excessive vehicle idling.
  • Entry into restricted or no-go areas.
  • Harsh braking events.
  • Delivery delays.
  • Stop Turn Around Times (TATs).
  • Planned versus actual kilometres.
  • Working and driving hours.
  • Standing time.
  • Route sequence compliance.
  • Vehicle-to-route allocations.

Where irregularities or delays are identified, the relevant information may need to be escalated to the appropriate manager.

Learners may also assist with route allocation handovers and ensure that outstanding calls or queries are passed to the next shift.

Working With the DRM System

The position also involves supporting activities within the Daily Route Management system.

Tasks may include:

  • Reviewing DRM reports used during driver debriefing.
  • Escalating inaccurate geo-fencing information.
  • Checking for inactive routes.
  • Acknowledging units that are not reporting.
  • Producing daily, weekly and monthly reports.
  • Providing relevant reports to the Project Manager.

The exact duties performed by a learner will depend on the operational requirements of the department and the instructions provided by the employer.

What Is Daily Route Management?

Daily Route Management, commonly referred to as DRM, involves comparing planned delivery activities with actual events during distribution operations.

For this type of role, learners may work with operational information concerning vehicle movements, delivery schedules, route changes and driver activity.

This can include reviewing information such as:

  • Planned and actual routes.
  • Delivery times.
  • Vehicle movements.
  • Driver behaviour.
  • Kilometres travelled.
  • Vehicle idling.
  • Delivery delays.
  • Route assignments.

Because of this, the opportunity may be particularly suitable for young people who are interested in administration, logistics, distribution operations and working with computer-based information.

Is Work Experience Required?

The supplied vacancy information does not list previous work experience as a minimum requirement.

The programme is intended to give unemployed young people an opportunity to develop practical workplace experience over a 12-month period.

Applicants without extensive employment histories should therefore concentrate on genuine strengths such as:

  • Reliability.
  • Communication.
  • Teamwork.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Administrative ability.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Motivation and commitment.

Do not add qualifications, experience or skills to your CV that you do not actually possess.
