Position Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is recruiting Security Guards to protect its employees, customers, property and company assets while maintaining a safe and secure environment. The successful candidates will be responsible for preventing and responding to security risks, monitoring the premises and ensuring that established security procedures are followed.
The role includes conducting regular patrols, controlling access to the premises, monitoring suspicious behaviour, performing authorised searches, maintaining security records and responding appropriately to emergencies and security incidents.
Key Responsibilities
Security and Protection: Maintain a visible security presence and protect Dis-Chem employees, customers, property and assets from theft, vandalism, unauthorised access and other security threats.
Patrolling: Conduct regular and random patrols of the premises and report any unusual, suspicious or potentially dangerous activity.
Access Control: Monitor entrances and exits, verify the authorisation of employees, visitors, suppliers, contractors and merchandisers, and maintain accurate access-control records.
Searches: Conduct personnel and vehicle searches in accordance with company procedures and applicable security requirements.
Surveillance: Monitor CCTV cameras and alarm systems where required and investigate suspicious activity identified through surveillance.
Record Keeping: Maintain occurrence books, access registers and other security documentation. Record incidents and daily activities accurately and prepare detailed reports when required.
Incident Response: Respond quickly to security incidents and immediately report serious matters to management. Contact the South African Police Service or emergency services when necessary.
Emergency Management: Assist with evacuations, guide employees and customers to designated assembly points, maintain order and help protect people and property during emergencies.
Premises Security: Monitor opening and closing procedures and ensure that doors, windows and other access points are properly secured.
Professional Conduct: Maintain professional and respectful relationships with employees and customers while following Dis-Chem security policies, procedures and operational standards.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Grade 12, Matric or Senior Certificate.
Security Accreditation: Valid PSIRA registration with a PSIRA Grade C accreditation.
Knowledge: Understanding of security procedures, access control and appropriate responses to emergency situations.
Communication: Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
Durban Position: Applicants for the Durban Security Stores position should have at least three years of general exposure within the retail industry, including environments such as shopping centres, retail stores or warehouses. At least one year of experience in a similar Security Guard position would be advantageous.

Decision-Making: Good judgement and the ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
Attention to Detail: Ability to accurately monitor activities, complete registers and prepare security reports.
Teamwork: Ability to work independently while also cooperating effectively with other security personnel and staff.
Safety Knowledge: For the Durban position, knowledge or training in fire emergencies, occupational health and safety and emergency procedures is essential. Knowledge of an additional South African language may also be advantageous.
Employment Conditions
Applicants must be registered with PSIRA, hold valid Grade C accreditation and be legally eligible to work in South Africa. Candidates may be required to undergo background screening, including criminal and credit checks, and must meet applicable MIE requirements. Employees should be prepared to work shifts, weekends, public holidays and night shifts where necessary.
Candidates must also be physically capable of performing patrols and authorised searches. Where driving duties are involved, a valid driver’s licence, reliable transport and a Professional Driving Permit may be required where applicable.
