ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This trainee programme combines structured classroom learning with practical workplace training. Successful candidates will support Train Drivers in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight and passenger trains across the rail network.
The programme prepares learners to qualify and work independently as Train Assistants within the rail industry.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 with:
- Mathematics / Pure Mathematics
- Physical Science
Additional requirements:
- Must be 21 years or older
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres
- Physically, mentally, and medically fit
- Able to carry heavy objects
- Willing to undergo medical and behavioural safety assessments
- Willingness to work shifts and irregular hours
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
Successful candidates will:
- Complete practical and theoretical rail training
- Work toward Train Assistant certification
- Participate in continuous safety and medical assessments
- Gain operational experience in train and locomotive systems
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Train Drivers during rail operations
- Prepare locomotives and communication equipment
- Conduct brake tests and safety inspections
- Support shunting operations and wagon handling
- Monitor train movement and follow safety procedures
- Assist during emergencies and incidents
- Complete train journals and administrative tasks
