About the Position

The appointed candidate will help maintain a safe environment for visitors using municipal swimming pools. The role requires constant supervision of swimming areas, quick responses to emergencies and the performance of lifesaving duties when necessary.

In addition to monitoring swimmers, the Lifeguard will assist with the daily operation of the facility. This includes testing and treating pool water, operating filtration and chlorine systems, inspecting equipment and completing the required safety records.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Monitor swimming areas and help ensure the safety of pool users.
  • Perform lifesaving duties at municipal swimming facilities.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately during emergencies.
  • Administer first aid when required.
  • Conduct daily pool-water tests.
  • Treat swimming-pool water according to operational standards.
  • Operate pool filtration equipment.
  • Operate the chlorine gas plant safely.
  • Operate heating and timing systems where applicable.
  • Inspect swimming-pool facilities and equipment.
  • Identify hazards or maintenance concerns.
  • Complete inspection sheets and other required records.
  • Support the safe and efficient operation of the swimming facility.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification.
  • A valid Lifeguard Award.
  • A valid First Aid Level 1 certificate.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience.

Candidates may also be required to provide confirmation of the NQF level of their qualifications.
