Position Overview
Pick n Pay Liquor is looking for enthusiastic, reliable, and service-driven individuals to join our in-store team as Sales Assistants and Packers. These roles are essential in delivering excellent customer service, maintaining store cleanliness and product availability, and ensuring a smooth shopping experience for every customer.
Sales Assistants are responsible for engaging directly with customers, handling liquor purchases, maintaining displays, and ensuring that stock levels on shelves are replenished. Packers are responsible for the presentation of stock, packing shelves accurately, maintaining order in stockrooms, and assisting in general housekeeping tasks to support the smooth operation of the liquor store.
The ideal candidate must be professional, customer-oriented, physically fit, and comfortable working in a high-paced retail environment. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good communication skills are essential. Due to the nature of the business, candidates must meet the minimum legal age to work in a liquor environment and should be willing to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays.
Sales Assistant Responsibilities
Provide excellent customer service by assisting customers with queries, product selection, and payment transactions. The Sales Assistant must have a solid understanding of product placement, current promotions, and store layout to guide customers effectively.
Operate the point-of-sale system (tills) accurately and handle cash, card, and voucher transactions responsibly. Ensure correct pricing is applied and that liquor sales comply with legal age restrictions and store policies. Verify customer age when required and follow procedures for restricted sales.
Monitor shelf stock levels throughout the day and ensure products are replenished timeously. This includes rotating stock according to expiry dates and restocking popular products promptly to meet customer demand.
Support in maintaining visual merchandising standards. This involves organising shelves neatly, facing products correctly, and participating in promotional displays to attract customer attention. The Sales Assistant plays an important role in creating a visually appealing and organised store environment.
Ensure that the checkout and sales area is kept clean, tidy, and presentable at all times. Assist with regular cleaning of shelves, till counters, and surrounding areas to maintain hygiene standards.
Report any discrepancies in pricing, stock levels, or damaged goods to the Liquor Supervisor or Store Manager promptly. Be alert to any potential loss prevention issues and follow security procedures as trained.
Understand and apply knowledge of liquor-related regulations, including trading hours, advertising limitations, and responsible selling practices. Follow all legal guidelines as well as Pick n Pay’s internal policies on liquor sales.
Work as part of a team and be flexible to assist in other areas of the store when required, such as general grocery departments, especially during peak trading periods or staff shortages.
Packer Responsibilities
Receive, unpack, and pack stock efficiently and accurately. Ensure all deliveries are accounted for, checked against invoices, and stored or displayed correctly.
Pack shelves with product in accordance with store layouts and merchandising guidelines. Ensure that stock is rotated to avoid expired products and that the oldest stock is sold first (FIFO – First In, First Out method).
Assist in keeping the back-of-house and stockroom areas neat, organised, and clean. This includes stacking boxes safely, following stock placement procedures, and ensuring easy access to products during restocking.
Check packaging for damages and report any broken or tampered goods. Remove damaged items from shelves and assist with documenting losses.
Support with inventory counts and stocktaking activities as directed by the Store Manager. Ensure accuracy when counting and recording quantities of liquor items.
Help to set up promotional displays and bulk stacks in high-traffic areas. This includes lifting and moving liquor boxes, arranging pricing boards, and ensuring the promotional space is tidy and eye-catching.
Assist customers with carrying purchases when required. Be polite and professional when offering help and ensure customer safety and satisfaction.
Ensure that all empty boxes and packaging materials are disposed of correctly and that aisles are kept free of hazards to prevent accidents.
