Overview
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is inviting applications for a General Worker position based at its Irene Weather Office. This permanent opportunity is suited to hardworking individuals who are eager to support the maintenance of weather observation facilities and contribute to the delivery of essential weather and climate services across the country.
The successful candidate will assist with infrastructure maintenance, support technical operations, and help ensure that weather stations and office facilities remain clean, functional, and compliant with safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, inspection, and upkeep of remote weather observation sites.
- Carry out maintenance and minor repairs on structures housing meteorological equipment.
- Perform grounds maintenance duties, including grass cutting, weed removal, and site cleaning.
- Clean office buildings, restrooms, and shared facilities to maintain a hygienic environment.
- Undertake basic building repairs and general maintenance tasks.
- Monitor infrastructure and company assets, reporting any faults or damage.
- Provide assistance with fleet and vehicle management activities.
- Help maintain adequate stock levels for maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in training programmes to develop technical and workplace skills.
- Support exhibitions, workshops, presentations, and public awareness campaigns.
- Assist with educational outreach initiatives, including school engagement activities.
- Contribute to mentoring and knowledge-sharing programmes within the organisation.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) or NQF Level 4 qualification.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Welding, handyman, or maintenance-related training will be an added advantage.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn and develop new technical competencies.
