Position Overview

The Gauteng Department of Education is recruiting 277 Examination Assistants to support the Examinations Management Directorate during the 2026 examination period. Positions are available at Head Office and various examination district offices throughout Gauteng.

Successful candidates will assist with the administration and secure handling of examination scripts. Duties will include receiving, checking, controlling, scanning, packing, dispatching and archiving examination materials.

This opportunity is particularly suited to registered tertiary students, unemployed individuals with tertiary qualifications and unemployed graduates who meet the required academic criteria. The role requires candidates who are highly accurate, numerically capable, organised and able to work effectively under pressure while meeting strict deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

Script Administration: Receive examination scripts and ensure that all materials are properly checked, controlled, scanned and packed for marking.

Verification: Confirm that the correct number of scripts and marksheets have been received for each batch and verify materials according to the subject, examination paper and session.

Quality Control: Identify discrepancies involving scripts, batches or marksheets and ensure that these issues are reported and addressed appropriately.

Marking Preparation: Prepare examination scripts for the correct marking venue and ensure that script bags contain the required documentation, including two copies of the MP Flow Control List.

Labelling and Dispatch: Ensure script bags are correctly tagged with the appropriate colour-coded marking-venue labels and assist with preparing and dispatching scripts to marking centres.

Record Management: Create marking-centre files for dispatched scripts and maintain accurate administrative records.

Marked Scripts: Receive and control marked examination scripts and assist with archiving scripts at Head Office where required.

Document Control: Ensure archived examination scripts are properly organised and can be retrieved efficiently when needed.

Compliance: Follow all examination administration, security and document-control procedures and complete allocated duties accurately within required deadlines.


Minimum Requirements

Academic Qualification: Applicants must hold a recognised Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate Vocational (NCV).

Eligible Applicants: Applications are open to registered tertiary students, unemployed individuals with one or more tertiary qualifications and unemployed graduates.

Numerical Ability: Applicants must have advanced numerical skills, with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject.

Tertiary Study: Candidates currently in their second year or above at a tertiary institution may receive preference.


Experience

Previous examination administration experience should be clearly stated in the application. Experience working as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer, whether at a marking centre or within an office-based examination environment, will be advantageous. Applicants may also be required to indicate the number of years they have worked as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer.

Procedure Compliance: Ability to follow detailed examination procedures and document-control requirements.


Applicants Who May Not Apply

Individuals who are writing the National Senior Certificate, Senior Certificate or AET examinations during 2026 may not apply. Persons who have taken the VSP and individuals who are currently employed elsewhere are also not eligible for consideration.

Applicants should be prepared to provide information regarding their Matric or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification, current tertiary registration, highest year of study and whether they passed Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy or Accounting at Matric or tertiary level. Applicants should also provide details of any previous Examination Assistant, Quality Assurer, examination administration or marking-centre experience.

CV Guidance

Your CV should clearly present your Matric qualification and any tertiary education. Include your current institution, qualification or programme, current year of study and any completed tertiary qualifications.

Clearly indicate whether you studied Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy or Accounting. Include any previous Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer experience, as well as examination administration, marking-centre, scanning, filing, data-capturing or document-control experience.

If you have previously worked during examination or marking periods, provide the organisation, position held and main responsibilities to demonstrate your relevant experience.
