Position Overview

The Gauteng Department of Health is recruiting two Store Assistants to join the Supply Chain Directorate at Tambo Memorial Hospital.

The successful candidates will provide practical support in the hospital’s warehouse and asset-management operations. The role involves receiving deliveries, packing and storing stock, picking items from shelves, moving goods and dispatching stock and assets to various areas within the hospital.

Candidates must be physically capable of handling heavy items when required and should be prepared to work in a busy environment. Successful applicants will also be required to rotate between the Warehouse and Assets components according to the designated rotation schedule.

Current and previous EPWP interns are specifically encouraged to apply.


Minimum Requirements

Qualification: Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification is required.

Communication: Applicants should have good verbal and written communication skills.

Interpersonal Skills: The ability to interact professionally with colleagues, supervisors and other hospital personnel is important.

Organisation: Candidates should demonstrate good planning, organisational and time-management abilities.

Teamwork: Applicants must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Work Under Pressure: Candidates should be capable of completing duties efficiently during busy or demanding periods.

Integrity: Honesty, reliability, accountability and good work ethics are essential when handling government stock and assets.

Physical Ability: Applicants must be able to handle and move heavy objects from time to time.

Warehouse Knowledge: Basic knowledge of warehouse operations and stock-handling procedures is required.

Public Service: Candidates should have an understanding of the Batho Pele Principles and their importance in delivering quality public services.


Key Responsibilities

Receiving Stock and Assets: Receive deliveries from suppliers and ensure that incoming stock and assets are handled carefully and placed in the correct storage areas.

Packing and Organising: Assist with packing delivered goods, arranging stock and maintaining an orderly warehouse environment.

Stock Picking: Retrieve requested items from shelves, place them on pallets and prepare them for movement or dispatch.

Dispatching: Transport and deliver stock and assets from the warehouse to the appropriate departments and areas within Tambo Memorial Hospital.

Housekeeping: Keep shelves, storage areas and warehouse facilities clean, organised and free from unnecessary obstacles. Proper housekeeping is important for maintaining an efficient and safe workplace.

Reporting Damaged Goods: Identify damaged, neglected or defective stock and assets and report these issues through the appropriate channels.

Occupational Health and Safety: Follow all applicable requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and ensure that duties are performed in a manner that protects employees, hospital property and other individuals.

Warehouse and Asset Rotation: Work in both the Warehouse and Assets sections according to the applicable rotation roster.

Overtime: Be willing to work overtime when required to meet operational needs.

Training and Development: Attend training sessions, meetings and development activities and participate in the Performance Management and Development System.

Following Instructions: Carry out lawful and reasonable instructions provided by supervisors and line managers.


EPWP Applicants

CV Guidance

Your CV should clearly state your Grade 10 qualification or equivalent and include any relevant experience in warehouses, stores, stockrooms, logistics, receiving, packing, picking, dispatching, loading and unloading or asset management.

Highlight experience involving stock organisation, housekeeping, reporting damaged goods and following occupational health and safety procedures.

If you have current or previous EPWP experience, make it clearly visible on your CV. Also emphasise qualities such as honesty, reliability, teamwork, communication, organisation, physical ability, willingness to learn and the ability to work under pressure.
