Are you a young South African looking to begin your career in retail? The Retail Skills Development Program is designed to equip youth with the foundational knowledge and practical experience needed to thrive in the fast-paced retail industry. This program provides an exciting opportunity for individuals with little or no previous work experience to gain both theoretical training and hands-on, in-store exposure.
Over the course of seven weeks, participants will receive comprehensive training focused on customer service, merchandising, stock handling, and retail operations. Those who complete the program successfully will be awarded an NQF Level 2 Certificate in retail practice—an accredited qualification that can significantly boost future employment prospects. Top-performing individuals may also be considered for permanent roles in-store.

Minimum Entry Requirements
To qualify for the Retail Skills Development Program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

South African citizenship with a valid South African ID document
-
Minimum Grade 10 pass (Matric / Grade 12 is advantageous)

Alternatively, successful completion of the Retail Readiness Program (RRP)
-
Age: Preferably between 18 and 35 years
-
Unemployed and not currently studying full-time
-
No prior formal work experience required
-
Must be willing and able to commit to the full 7-week program
-
Must reside within reasonable proximity to a participating store
Program Structure
This 7-week skills program includes both theoretical and practical components, structured as follows:
Weeks 1–3: Classroom-Based Theory Training

Workplace communication

Point-of-sale procedures

Retail safety and hygiene

Merchandising basics

Teamwork and professional behavior

Loss prevention and store security
Weeks 4–7: In-Store Practical Experience

Shadowing experienced store staff

Applying learned theory in a real-world environment

Rotating between departments for holistic exposure

Working under supervision to gain confidence and hands-on skills

Receiving continuous feedback and performance coaching
Key Duties During Practical Training
As a Retail Skills Development Program trainee, you will be responsible for supporting daily store operations. Duties may include:
1. Customer Service

Greeting and assisting customers in a friendly, helpful manner
-
Answering customer inquiries and helping them find products
-
Providing product knowledge and support under supervision
2. Point-of-Sale (POS) Support
-
Assisting cashiers with packing and organizing purchases
-
Observing and learning how transactions are processed
-
Understanding returns, exchanges, and customer queries
3. Stock Receiving & Inventory Management
-
Assisting with receiving and checking deliveries
-
Unpacking stock and ensuring correct storage
-
Helping with stock counts and keeping records up to date
4. Merchandising & Store Presentation
-
Replenishing shelves and setting up displays
-
Maintaining clean, organized, and visually appealing shop floors
-
Learning how to create engaging displays that align with promotional activities
5. Department Rotation
-
Gaining exposure to different areas of the store such as clothing, footwear, accessories, and stockroom
-
Learning how each department functions and contributes to the store’s overall success
6. Back-Office and Admin Support

Assisting with daily paperwork, filing, and basic data capturing
-
Learning about scheduling, reporting, and internal communication
-
Supporting store staff with planning and operational duties
7. Loss Prevention and Stock Control
-
Understanding the importance of stock accuracy and minimizing shrinkage
-
Identifying and reporting suspicious behavior
-
Learning store policies related to risk management and security
8. Training & Development
-
Participating in on-the-job coaching and check-ins with supervisors
-
Completing required assessments and logbooks for qualification
-
Demonstrating willingness to grow and meet performance expectations
