Reports To: Shift Supervisor / Assistant Restaurant Manager / Restaurant General Manager

About KFC

KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken), part of the YUM! Brands family, is a globally recognised fast‑food restaurant chain known for its signature fried chicken, high service standards, and commitment to quality, cleanliness, and customer satisfaction. With hundreds of outlets across South Africa, KFC is more than just a place to eat — it’s an environment built on teamwork, training, growth, and consistent standards.

Joining the KFC team means becoming part of a diverse workforce dedicated to delivering memorable customer experiences, maintaining safety and hygiene, and continuously improving both food quality and service efficiency.

Position Purpose

As a Team Member / Crew Member, you will be one of the front‑line faces and hands of KFC. You will help ensure smooth daily operations, uphold the highest standards in food preparation and customer service, maintain cleanliness, and support team efforts during peak and quieter periods alike. The role is physically demanding, fast‑paced, and requires flexibility, responsibility, and a proactive attitude.

You’ll gain operational experience across multiple areas — kitchen, front‑of‑house, drive‑thru (if applicable), cleaning, stocking — which provides a strong foundation for growth and advancement within KFC or the broader hospitality / retail sector.

Key Responsibilities

Below are the core duties and tasks you will be expected to perform as a Team Member. Responsibilities may shift somewhat depending on the branch, time of day, and specific operational needs, but all Team Members are expected to contribute to the following:

1. Food Preparation & Kitchen Duties

  • Prepare and cook KFC’s signature menu items (such as chicken pieces, fillets, burgers, sides) according to KFC recipes, portion sizes, and cooking standards.

  • Monitor cooking times, temperature controls, and holding times (after cooking, waiting for serving) to ensure food safety and consistent quality.

  • Maintain strict compliance with food hygiene, safety, handling, and storage regulations. This includes correctly storing ingredients, checking expiration dates, ensuring clean utensils, and proper separation of raw and cooked items.

  • Assist with prepping ingredients: marinating, breading, portioning, cutting, etc. Tasks may include working with sauces, spices, sides, or garnish elements.

  • Operate kitchen equipment safely — fryers, grills, ovens, warmers — following all safety and cleaning procedures.

2. Customer Service & Front‑of‑House Tasks

  • Greet customers in a warm, friendly manner with a positive attitude. Make them feel welcome.

  • Take customer orders accurately (either at counter or drive‑thru), using point-of-sale / cash register systems effectively.

  • Handle customer queries, complaints, or special requests with patience and professionalism. Escalate to supervisor when needed.

  • Package and serve orders correctly, ensuring that the final presentation, portioning and packaging meet KFC standards.

  • Offer assistance to customers – for example, helping with trays, drink refills, keeping the dining area clean, ensuring condiments are stocked.

3. Cleanliness, Hygiene & Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness in all areas: kitchen, dining area, bathrooms (if applicable), drive‑thru lanes (if present), and exterior facades.

  • Follow cleaning schedules and checklists: regular wiping, sanitization of surfaces, equipment cleaning, waste disposal.

  • Ensure utensils, dishes, trays, and cookware are cleaned and stored properly.

  • Monitor and report any equipment faults (broken fryers, temperature issues, safety hazards, etc.) to shift supervisors or management.

4. Inventory & Stock Management

  • Assist with receiving deliveries: check correct items, quantities, condition; date and rotate stock appropriately to minimize waste and spoilage.

  • Restock items needed in kitchen, front‑of‑house, and service areas (condiments, napkins, drinks, disposables).

  • Monitor expiry dates on stored items and move items accordingly (first in, first out).

  • Report low stock levels to supervisors so that restocking can be planned.

5. Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and food safety regulations. This includes wearing required PPE (gloves, aprons, hairnets, etc.), following correct handling procedures, and keeping safe distance where required.

  • Participate in safety trainings and maintain awareness of potential hazards (hot surfaces, slippery floors, sharp tools).

  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality audits, and checklists. Support regular internal or external inspections.

6. Teamwork, Communication & Flexibility

  • Collaborate with co‑workers: help others during busy periods, assist in cross‑training, share knowledge.

  • Take direction from supervisors or managers, communicate issues, provide feedback where needed.

  • Be flexible with schedules: cover shifts, help with end‑of‑day closing duties, support preparations before opening or after closing.

Skills & Attributes Required

To excel in this role, you should have a mix of technical, personal, and interpersonal skills. Some may come naturally; others can be developed with training and experience:
