Position Overview
As a Brewing / Packaging Operator, you play an essential role in our production line. You will be responsible for safely running and maintaining packaging machinery, ensuring that production targets are met, product quality is maintained, and all hygiene and safety standards are followed. You’ll work across shifts, often in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment, supporting both packaging and some brewing or utilities tasks depending on business needs.
You will also be involved in process monitoring, taking corrective actions when needed, helping maintain equipment, and contributing to reporting and performance tracking. Your work will be critical to ensuring that our products reach consumers on time, in perfect condition, and in compliance with all relevant standards.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Here are the main duties and expectations for this role:
1. Equipment Operation & Process Management
-Operate both manual and automatic packaging machines according to established standards and operating procedures. This includes conveyors, fillers, cappers, labellers, sealers or pack wrappers, depending on the line.
–Interpret the production schedule for your shift (daily or shift plan), align your work to the plan, and ensure targets (hroughput, efficiency, quality) are met.
-Monitor machinery performance and production line flow. Keep an eye out for deviations (e.g. slower line speed, machine jams, packaging defects) and either resolve or escalate issues.
-Where applicable, support maintenance tasks: basic upkeep of machinery, cleaning, lubrication, and minor troubleshooting.
2. Quality, Hygiene & Food Safety Compliance
-Ensure that all packaging output meets quality standards (no leaks, correct seal, accurate labelling, correct fill volumes etc.).
-Adhere strictly to food safety and hygiene rules. Disinfect and sanitize equipment and work areas, maintain clean packaging supplies, ensure that all surfaces, tools, and machines are cleaned according to schedule.
-Participate in any hygiene audits, quality assurance checks, and tests to confirm compliance.
3. Reporting, Monitoring & Continuous Improvement
-Use PIMS (Process Information Management Systems), POMS (Production Operations Management Systems) or similar tools to track and monitor production performance (volume, waste, downtime, defect rates etc.).
-Monitor negative trends in metrics (e.g. increase in packaging rejects, line stoppages) and take prompt corrective action. Where trends indicate deeper issues, escalate appropriately.
-Respond to OFRs (Operational Failure Reports) triggered by specific performance or quality thresholds. Document corrective actions and follow up to ensure problem resolution.
-Help compile or contribute to AB (or SAB/AB InBev) standard reports as required, including shift reports, safety incidents, performance summaries etc.
4. Safety & Workplace Environment
-Maintain a safe work environment. Follow all safety protocols; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
-Report hazards, spills, defects in equipment, unsafe practices immediately. Help conduct safety inspections or participate in safety meetings/drills.
-Keep the packaging area, utility zones, and surroundings clean, organized, and compliant with housekeeping standards (often -following 5S or similar methodologies).
5. Administration, Compliance & Coordination
-Perform administrative tasks associated with your role: filling out shift logs, recording machine performance, tracking inputs and outputs, documenting machine downtime, material wastage, etc.
-Ensure traceability and adherence to packaging standards and legal or company requirements for product labelling, batch codes, expiry dates etc.
-Work as part of a team. Coordinate with brewing or fermentation teams if your duties overlap; ensure smooth handover between shifts to maintain consistency.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, you should meet at least the following:
-Educational Qualification: Grade 12 (Matric) is required.
-Experience / Training: At least 9 months of on-the-job training in packaging operations, ideally within an FMCG (Fast‑Moving Consumer Goods) environment. If you have completed a SKAP (or equivalent skills training / apprenticeship) program, that is advantageous.
-Industry Experience: Some experience within packaging in beverage or analogous industries (e.g. food, soft drinks) is highly desirable.
Preferred Experience & Additional Skills
While not strictly required, candidates with the following will have an edge:
-Experience with packaging lines: bottles, cans, kegging, or labeling equipment.
-Practical exposure to maintenance tasks or basic mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
-Familiarity with digital monitoring tools (PIMS, POMS, SCADA, or similar systems).
-Strong understanding of food safety, hygiene and regulatory compliance.
-Prior experience following shift production plans and achieving metrics (productivity, waste, quality).

Working Conditions
-You will be in a production environment: possibly loud, wet, cold or humid depending on area (e.g. cooling, refrigeration, utility sections).
-There will be physical demands: standing for long periods, walking, perhaps lifting or moving packaging material.
-Some exposure to chemicals (cleaning agents), hot surfaces or equipment, and sometimes slippery floors. Ensure adherence to PPE and safety protocols is non-negotiable.
-Shift work is required: afternoon, night, weekend and public holiday shifts may be scheduled to support 24/7 or near‑continuous operations.
