About PEP

PEP is one of South Africa’s largest and most recognized retail brands. With a mission to make quality clothing, footwear, and household items affordable to everyone, PEP has established over two thousand stores across the country. The company is rooted in strong community values and strives to create a positive shopping experience for every customer. PEP is known for its warm culture, energy, and focus on people—both customers and employees. If you are looking to build a future in retail and want to work in a company that values respect, teamwork, and growth, then this opportunity might be right for you.

Position Summary

The role of a Sales Assistant at PEP is essential to the successful operation of the store. You will be directly involved in assisting customers, maintaining store appearance, operating the till, and ensuring stock levels are managed correctly. This role requires a high level of energy, commitment, and a passion for customer service. You must be someone who enjoys working with people, can work under pressure, and is ready to learn and contribute in a dynamic retail environment.

As a Sales Assistant, you will be working closely with your store team, reporting to the Store Manager or Supervisor. You will also play an important part in achieving the store’s daily performance goals. Your job is to ensure that every customer who walks into the store leaves with a positive impression.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Your key responsibility is to provide excellent service to customers. This includes greeting them when they enter the store, answering questions about products, and helping them find what they are looking for. You will need to stay informed about the store’s promotions and offers so that you can share them with customers and encourage them to make purchases.

You will also operate the cash register. This involves scanning items, processing payments, issuing receipts, and giving change accurately. You must ensure that the till is balanced at the end of your shift and report any discrepancies to your supervisor. Working at the till requires you to be focused and alert at all times.

Another important part of your job will be managing stock. You will help receive new deliveries, unpack boxes, and place items on shelves in the correct order. It is important to keep the store well-stocked and tidy so that customers can find what they need easily. You may also be required to help in the stockroom or assist in preparing the store for stock takes.

Maintaining store cleanliness is also part of your role. You must keep the sales floor neat, remove empty hangers or packaging, and ensure that fitting rooms are orderly. Customers must always feel that the store is clean, safe, and easy to shop in. You will need to act quickly if you notice any hazards or spills that could cause injury.

In addition to your individual responsibilities, you are expected to work as part of a team. At PEP, store teams are referred to as “Dynamos” because they are expected to work with energy and enthusiasm. You will be required to support your coworkers, help when someone is behind with their tasks, and contribute positively to team spirit.

You may also be asked to assist in setting up promotions, changing window displays, and handling customer returns. During busy seasons or sales events, you must be willing to go the extra mile to keep the store running smoothly.

Loss prevention is a key focus area in retail. You will need to be alert to possible theft or suspicious activity. You should report anything unusual to the store manager or follow the procedures outlined in your training. Taking care of company property, stock, and equipment is part of your everyday responsibility.

Qualifications and Skills

To qualify for this position, you must have completed Grade 12 or possess a similar qualification. A good level of literacy and numeracy is necessary to perform your duties effectively. You should be able to speak and understand English clearly. Other South African languages are also an advantage, especially when interacting with customers from different backgrounds.

No previous retail experience is required, but it is an advantage. Full training will be provided to successful candidates. You must be open to learning, be coachable, and be willing to take on feedback to improve your performance.

You must have a friendly and positive attitude. Good communication skills are essential because you will be speaking to customers throughout your shift. You should be able to listen carefully, respond politely, and solve minor problems as they arise.

Physical fitness is important in this role. You must be able to stand for long hours, move around the store, carry stock, and sometimes work in warm or busy environments. You should also be able to handle pressure during peak periods such as month-end, holidays, or promotional sales.

Flexibility is key. PEP stores operate during weekends, public holidays, and special trading hours. You must be willing to work rotating shifts and be available when the store needs extra help. This flexibility is essential if you want to succeed in a retail career.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who is reliable, honest, and hardworking. You must take your job seriously and show up on time, dressed in the correct uniform, and ready to work. Your personal presentation matters because you represent the PEP brand when dealing with customers.

You should enjoy helping people and take pride in providing good service. A passion for retail and customer satisfaction will help you stand out. You must also be adaptable, able to follow instructions, and stay calm in stressful situations.

Being a team player is essential. You will be part of a team that works together to meet store goals. You must be respectful toward others, communicate clearly, and be willing to assist wherever needed.

If you are someone who pays attention to detail, follows rules, and always tries to do your best, you are likely to enjoy and succeed in this role.

What PEP Offers You

PEP offers a supportive and people-first work environment. The company is committed to employee development and encourages staff to learn new skills and grow in their careers. Many of PEP’s store managers and supervisors began their journey as Sales Assistants.

You will receive on-the-job training and coaching to help you perform at your best. PEP also provides uniforms and access to internal opportunities. If you show dedication, good performance, and a willingness to grow, you may be considered for advancement within the company.

As an employee, you will receive store discounts, be part of a vibrant team, and contribute to a company that helps millions of South Africans afford quality products for their homes and families.
