Introduction

South African Breweries (SAB), a leading beverage manufacturing company and part of a globally recognized brewing group, is seeking a motivated and skilled Packaging Operator to join its dynamic operations team. The Packaging Operator plays a vital role in ensuring that finished products are packaged efficiently, safely, and in line with strict quality and food safety standards.

The successful candidate will be responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining packaging equipment and related processes. This position requires a strong focus on safety, productivity, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. Working within a fast-paced FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) environment, the Packaging Operator must demonstrate technical competence, attention to detail, teamwork, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.


Key Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Packaging Operator role is to safely and effectively operate defined packaging equipment and manage associated processes to achieve optimal operational performance. This includes meeting production targets, maintaining high-quality standards, ensuring food safety compliance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the packaging department.

The role also contributes to minimizing downtime, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and ensuring that all packaging activities align with SAB’s operational excellence standards. By following established procedures and actively engaging with performance monitoring systems, the Packaging Operator supports the broader manufacturing objectives of the organization.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

Equipment Operation and Process Management

  • Operate and control packaging equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.

  • Manage associated packaging processes to ensure smooth production flow and optimal equipment effectiveness.

  • Operate both manual and automated machines on the packaging line, ensuring proper setup, adjustments, and shutdown procedures.

  • Monitor machine performance and respond promptly to process deviations or equipment malfunctions.

Production Planning and Execution

  • Interpret and implement the production plan allocated for each shift.

  • Ensure that production targets are met while maintaining required quality, safety, and efficiency standards.

  • Coordinate activities on the line to support uninterrupted production and timely completion of packaging schedules.

Quality, Hygiene, and Food Safety

  • Ensure that all packaged products meet SAB’s quality specifications and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain strict adherence to hygiene and food safety standards at all times.

  • Conduct routine quality checks and inspections, taking corrective action when deviations are identified.

  • Support audits and inspections related to quality, food safety, and compliance.

Performance Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

  • Track, monitor, and record production and process data accurately.

  • Use performance monitoring systems such as PIMS (Production Information Management Systems) and POMS (Production Operations Management Systems) to identify trends and areas for improvement.

  • Take corrective action when negative trends or performance issues are identified.

  • Apply OFRs (Operational Failure Reports) in line with established triggers to address root causes of inefficiencies or breakdowns.

Administration and Reporting

  • Complete all required administrative tasks accurately and on time, including production reports, downtime logs, and quality records.

  • Contribute to AB (Anheuser-Busch) reports and other operational reports as required.

  • Ensure accurate documentation to support performance analysis, compliance, and decision-making.

Health, Safety, and Environment

  • Ensure and maintain a safe and healthy working environment in line with SAB’s safety policies and procedures.

  • Comply with all occupational health and safety regulations and actively participate in safety initiatives.

  • Identify and report potential hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions.

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the workplace.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with team members, supervisors, and other departments to achieve operational goals.

  • Communicate effectively to ensure alignment on production priorities, challenges, and improvement opportunities.

  • Participate in training, coaching, and development initiatives to enhance skills and knowledge.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) qualification is essential.

  • An N3 qualification is required.

  • A minimum of 9 months of on-the-job training, with successful completion of SKAP (Skills Knowledge and Application Program) within 12 months.

  • Previous experience in a packaging environment within the FMCG industry is highly desirable.

  • Basic technical knowledge of packaging machinery and production processes.

  • A strong understanding of safety, hygiene, and food safety principles.
