As a Cashier, you will be a key representative of the brand, interacting directly with customers and ensuring that every transaction is handled efficiently, accurately, and professionally.


Key Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Cashier role is to ensure smooth, accurate, and friendly checkout experiences for customers. Cashiers are responsible for processing customer purchases, handling payments, maintaining till accuracy, and upholding Pick n Pay’s service, hygiene, and security standards. Through consistent professionalism and attention to detail, Cashiers help build customer trust and loyalty while supporting the overall success of store operations.


Key Responsibilities

Customer Service and Interaction

  • Greet customers warmly and interact with them in a courteous, friendly, and professional manner.

  • Respond promptly to customer queries and provide accurate information regarding products, prices, and promotions.

  • Resolve customer complaints or concerns efficiently, escalating issues to supervisors when necessary.

  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by delivering fast, respectful, and attentive service at all times.

Point of Sale (POS) Operations

  • Accurately process customer transactions using Pick n Pay’s point-of-sale (POS) system.

  • Scan items efficiently while ensuring prices and quantities are correct.

  • Handle all forms of payment, including cash, cards, vouchers, and electronic transactions.

  • Issue refunds and exchanges in line with company policies and procedures.

Cash Handling and Till Management

  • Prepare and manage the cash float at the beginning and end of each shift.

  • Balance the till accurately and report any discrepancies immediately.

  • Ensure all cash-handling procedures are followed to maintain financial accuracy and security.

  • Adhere strictly to store policies regarding cash control and loss prevention.

Sales Support and Upselling

  • Promote current specials, loyalty programs, and relevant products when appropriate.

  • Upsell products and services in a professional and customer-friendly manner.

  • Support store sales targets by identifying opportunities to enhance customer purchases.

Hygiene, Housekeeping, and Safety

  • Maintain a clean, neat, and organized checkout area at all times.

  • Ensure hygiene standards are upheld, particularly when handling food items.

  • Operate and clean checkout equipment, scanners, and tills according to company standards.

  • Follow all health and safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment for staff and customers.

Loss Prevention and Security

  • Prevent wastage, shrinkage, and damage by following correct procedures.

  • Adhere to security protocols, including monitoring suspicious behavior and reporting concerns.

  • Handle products and transactions responsibly to minimize losses.

  • Comply with all internal controls and operational guidelines.

Teamwork and Store Support

  • Work cooperatively with supervisors and colleagues to ensure smooth store operations.

  • Assist in other store duties when required, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to learn.

  • Support peak trading periods by maintaining efficiency under pressure.


Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Cashier position, candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Grade 10 qualification or higher.

  • Basic computer literacy, particularly for operating POS systems.

  • Good verbal communication skills and the ability to interact confidently with customers.

  • Availability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required.
