Introduction:

Dis-Chem Pharmacies, South Africa’s leading pharmacy group, is proud to launch the Cosmetics Retail Learnership Programme, an exciting opportunity designed for young, vibrant individuals who are passionate about beauty, cosmetics, and customer service. This programme is offered across selected branches nationwide and is tailored to equip participants with the core retail and customer service skills required in the fast-paced cosmetics and beauty industry.

This learnership is a structured, work-based programme that combines theoretical training with practical, on-the-job experience. It is an ideal opportunity for school leavers and unemployed youth who wish to gain recognized retail experience and build a solid foundation in cosmetics sales and merchandising, while earning a stipend.

Purpose of the Learnership

The purpose of this programme is to develop learners into well-rounded cosmetic retail professionals with expertise in customer service, health and beauty sales, and stock and display management. This initiative also supports the national priority of youth employment through skills development.

On completion, learners will be better positioned for employment within the Dis-Chem group or other major retail organisations.

Responsibilities During the Programme

Stock Control Duties
Learners will assist in ensuring that all products on display are fresh, undamaged, and not expired. They will be responsible for checking stock availability and ensuring shelves are well-stocked at all times. Participation in stock takes will be required as per operational schedules. Learners will maintain cleanliness and organisation in the storeroom and follow health and hygiene procedures. Any low stock levels, damaged items, or expired products must be reported to the supervisor. Stock must be rotated regularly to adhere to FIFO (First-In, First-Out) procedures. Boxes must be flattened after unpacking stock and taken to designated areas. When necessary, learners will restock shelves to maintain sales availability and report discrepancies in stock levels to management.

Merchandising Tasks
Learners must ensure a high standard of merchandising throughout the store and particularly within the Cosmetics Department. Displays, including those at the entrance and in windows, must be presented attractively and cleaned regularly. Cosmetic demonstrations, makeovers, and promotional activities may be required during in-store campaigns. All products must be correctly priced and labelled according to Dis-Chem’s merchandising layout standards. Promotional stock must be placed in the appropriate display areas. Any price discrepancies must be reported to store management without delay. Assistance in loading and unpacking new stock will be expected.

Customer Service Engagement
Learners are expected to deliver consistent, friendly, and professional customer service. They must greet customers, assist with product inquiries, and provide advice based on customer needs, while respecting customer brand preferences. Learners should not pressure customers into making alternative choices. Handling stock and promotion queries is a key responsibility. Processing sales using the Cosmetic Point of Sale (POS) system may be required. Professional behaviour, a well-groomed appearance, and maintaining the Dis-Chem brand image are compulsory at all times.
