Purpose of the Programme

The TMPD Trainee Programme aims to develop competent, ethical, and physically fit law enforcement officers who are able to enforce by-laws, uphold traffic regulations, ensure public safety, and contribute to community policing. The programme will equip trainees with theoretical and practical knowledge in traffic law enforcement, crime prevention, and municipal by-law enforcement, laying the foundation for a successful policing career within the Metro.


Duties and Responsibilities

While the primary role during the training phase is to learn and undergo assessments, successful candidates will ultimately be expected to perform the following functions as fully qualified Metro Police Officers:

-Enforce traffic regulations and by-laws within the City of Tshwane jurisdiction.

-Regulate traffic flow and ensure road safety compliance.

-Issue fines and citations for traffic and municipal by-law infringements.

-Conduct crime prevention patrols across designated sectors.

-Respond to emergency situations, accidents, and incidents.

-Assist in the arrest and processing of suspects as per law enforcement protocols.

-Participate in community policing efforts and public awareness campaigns.

-Safeguard public property and municipal infrastructure.

-Work closely with SAPS, emergency services, and other relevant agencies.

-Maintain accurate records and submit reports as required.

Note: These responsibilities become effective post-training upon official appointment as a Metro Police Officer.


Programme Structure

The training programme consists of both theoretical and practical modules over a structured 18-month period. Training will be provided at TMPD-approved academies and includes the following components:

Traffic Law Enforcement

-Road traffic signs and regulations

-Road safety awareness

-Vehicle control and management

Municipal By-law Enforcement

-Understanding and applying Tshwane municipal by-laws

-Public order management

-Handling public disturbances

Crime Prevention Techniques

-Community policing

-Visible policing strategies

-Tactical response

Physical Training

-Daily fitness drills

-Defensive tactics

-Firearm competency

Professional Development

-Ethics and integrity in law enforcement

-Communication skills

-Report writing and case file management

Trainees will be assessed continuously and must meet academic, physical, and disciplinary standards to progress through the programme and qualify for full employment.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the TMPD Trainee Intake Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

-Be a South African citizen with valid South African ID.

-Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years.

-Possess a Grade 12 / Matric Certificate or equivalent (No exceptions).

-Possess a valid, unendorsed South African driver’s license (Code B or higher).

-Be medically and physically fit to undergo strenuous training.

-Have no criminal record or pending criminal cases.

-Be fluent in English and at least one other official language.

-Have no visible tattoos (especially offensive or gang-related symbols).

-Must not be currently employed or studying full-time elsewhere.

-Reside within the Tshwane jurisdiction (proof of residence required).

Stipend and Conditions

-Successful applicants will receive a monthly stipend during the training period.

-Trainees will be expected to sign a 12–24 month fixed-term training agreement with the TMPD.

-Uniforms, accommodation (if applicable), and training materials will be provided.

-Upon successful completion, trainees may be permanently appointed as Constables within the TMPD, subject to available posts and performance during training.

-Certified copy of Matric certificate.

-Certified copy of valid driver’s license.

-Detailed CV with contactable references.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for fitness assessments, interviews, medical tests, and further screening. Applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date must consider their application unsuccessful.
