Programme Overview

The South African National Defence Force invites disciplined, motivated, and committed young South Africans to apply for the 2027 intake of the Military Skills Development System (MSDS).

This structured two-year programme is designed to provide military training, leadership development, and technical skills to prepare candidates for possible full-time or contract service within the Army, Air Force, Navy, or Military Health Service.

Participants will complete Basic Military Training (BMT), followed by functional and specialised training aligned to their chosen service branch.


Programme Objectives

The MSDS aims to develop:

  • Core military skills

  • Leadership and teamwork abilities

  • Physical fitness and readiness

  • Professional discipline and resilience

  • Technical and operational competencies

Outstanding performers may be considered for extended contracts or permanent positions, subject to organisational requirements.


Key Responsibilities

During the two-year programme, participants will be expected to:

Basic Military Training

  • Complete physical fitness training

  • Learn weapon handling and military drills

  • Study military law, ethics, and discipline

  • Adapt to structured military routines

Functional Training

Depending on the service branch, training may include:

  • Combat operations

  • Aviation and air support services

  • Naval operations and seamanship

  • Military health and medical support

  • Engineering and technical functions

  • Command and leadership development

Military Conduct

  • Maintain strict discipline and professionalism

  • Comply with military regulations and orders

  • Represent the SANDF with integrity and respect

Operational Participation

  • Assist with assigned military duties

  • Participate in exercises, parades, and deployments

  • Support national and community initiatives

Physical Readiness

  • Attend regular fitness training

  • Meet required health and wellness standards


Minimum Requirements

Citizenship

  • Must be a South African citizen (valid RSA ID required)

Age

  • 18–22 years (with Grade 12)

  • 18–26 years (with tertiary qualification)

Education

  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate (compulsory)

  • Post-matric qualification (N6, Diploma, Degree) is advantageous

Personal Criteria

  • Must be single with no dependents

  • No criminal record

  • Medically fit for military training

  • Willing to relocate anywhere in South Africa

  • Must meet specific branch entry standards
