Overview

The Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport is inviting applications from suitably qualified and physically capable individuals to join the team as General Workers. The role of a General Worker is central to ensuring that departmental operations in farming, security, and general maintenance run effectively. It involves carrying out a range of manual duties, from animal control to fence repairs, often in outdoor and rural environments. Eligibility Criteria

Educational Requirement:

-Minimum of Grade 8 or ABET Level 2 (or any equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA).

Knowledge Areas:

-Awareness of security procedures and how to manage restricted areas.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

General Workers in this department handle diverse responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

1. Farming and Agricultural Duties

-Assist in daily farming operations, such as planting, watering, and harvesting crops.

-Monitor the movement of cloven-hooved animals within designated areas.

2. Security and Access Control

-Stop and record details of vehicles entering or leaving the redline area.

-Search vehicles and seize prohibited goods in line with regulations.

-Open and close gates as instructed.

3. Fence Maintenance

-Conduct patrols along fences to detect breaches or weaknesses.

-Perform minor fence repairs as needed.

-Clear overgrown vegetation and bushes along fence lines to ensure visibility and accessibility.

4. Animal Quarantine and Tracking

-Track animal movements by following footprints and other signs along fences.

-Help in controlling and caring for quarantined animals.

-Verify animal transport permits to ensure compliance with health and safety rules.

5. Record Keeping

-Maintain accurate logs and registers related to permits, quarantined livestock, and vehicle movements.

-Submit short written reports of daily activities or incidents to supervisors.
