If you are a self-starter with strong attention to detail, leadership potential, and experience in managing stock and operational processes, this opportunity may be the next step in your career.

Position Summary

As a Sales Associate / Shop Controller, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of the store, particularly during early mornings and at the end of trading days. Your primary responsibility is to maintain effective control over stock, uphold operational standards, and provide consistent and outstanding customer service.

This position requires a proactive and results-driven individual who can manage multiple priorities, coordinate with team members, and support business continuity during critical operational periods. The role offers both challenge and reward and is a key stepping stone to higher leadership roles within the Woolworths structure.

Key Areas of Responsibility

1. Customer Service Excellence

Customer experience is the heart of retail success. In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Welcome all customers warmly and professionally.

  • Acknowledge each shopper with a smile, friendly demeanor, and positive attitude.

  • Provide accurate information and resolve customer queries with care and efficiency.

  • Understand customer needs and ensure their shopping experience is seamless.

  • Assist customers with locating products, understanding promotions, or completing purchases.

By being the face of Woolworths, you will contribute directly to building customer loyalty and enhancing the overall reputation of the store.

2. Efficient Stock Management

Maintaining the accuracy and availability of stock is vital to the performance of any retail store. Your role will include:

  • Conducting accurate daily and weekly stock counts, reconciling discrepancies between storage and shop floor.

  • Managing Balance on Hand (BOH) accuracy to reflect actual stock availability.

  • Receiving deliveries promptly and efficiently within trading hours, ensuring accuracy in quantities and product types.

  • Implementing price changes, carry-over stock replenishment, and removing expired or non-compliant goods.

  • Performing temperature checks on applicable stock (e.g., refrigerated items).

  • Completing all stock transactions and ensuring proper documentation is submitted as part of End of Day (EOD) procedures.

Your input in this area will directly impact product availability, store profitability, and customer satisfaction.

3. End of Day (EOD) and Early Morning Operations

Retail operations continue beyond trading hours. A significant aspect of this role involves:

  • Executing EOD checklists to ensure all operational elements are properly closed off.

  • Handing over responsibilities clearly and efficiently to the Early Morning Controller.

  • Ensuring that the store is secure, clean, and reset for the following trading day.

  • Coordinating cleaning, merchandising, restocking, and cash reconciliation processes.

  • Monitoring that all safety protocols and risk mitigation measures are followed.

This behind-the-scenes work ensures business continuity and operational readiness for the next shift.

4. Shrinkage Control and Risk Management

Shrinkage—losses due to theft, error, or damage—can severely affect business performance. Your responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and reporting any suspicious or dishonest activities that may lead to stock loss or fraud.

  • Enforcing loss prevention procedures, including random security checks and red-flag protocols.

  • Ensuring the store is never left unattended and is monitored appropriately.

  • Implementing security checks on entry and exit of stock, especially during EOD processes.

By maintaining vigilance and enforcing policies, you’ll help protect Woolworths’ assets and maintain a safe shopping and working environment.

5. Shop-Keeping Discipline and Store Presentation

First impressions matter. You will be expected to:

  • Maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the store at all times, with special attention to food safety zones.

  • Ensure that cold chain protocols are followed and refrigeration units are cleaned regularly.

  • Monitor and respond to Known Gap Reports (KGR) to keep stock replenishment on track.

  • Ensure shelves are well-stocked, products are front-faced, and displays are visually appealing.

Maintaining shop-floor discipline enhances the customer experience and contributes to increased sales.

6. Team Collaboration and Leadership

While not a formal management position, this role carries leadership expectations. You will:

  • Coordinate tasks and provide direction to end-of-day team members.

  • Follow up on assigned responsibilities and support your team to meet shared goals.

  • Lead by example in matters of punctuality, work ethic, dress code, hygiene, and professionalism.

  • Act as a role model for junior staff and encourage a culture of accountability and integrity.

Team cohesion and morale will benefit directly from your positive influence.
