About the Job: General Assistant (External Applications Only)
The General Assistant plays an essential role in ensuring the smooth daily operations of the store and providing a consistently positive shopping experience for all customers. This position is focused on delivering excellent customer service, maintaining merchandising standards, and upholding strict housekeeping and safety guidelines within a designated area of responsibility. The General Assistant contributes directly to the store’s image, efficiency, and overall customer satisfaction by ensuring that aisles are clean, well-stocked, and easy to navigate.
Job Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- A Grade 10 (NQF Level 3) qualification with at least one year of relevant work experience, or a Grade 12 certificate without prior experience.
- The ability to communicate clearly in English as well as the dominant local language spoken in the area where the store is located.
- A valid South African ID or an approved work permit.
- Basic numeracy skills and the ability to perform simple calculations accurately.
- Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as required by the store’s operational schedule.
- The capacity to work efficiently under pressure, especially during peak trading periods.
Key Performance Areas
1. Customer Service
Providing excellent customer service is central to this role. The General Assistant is expected to:
- Assist customers by advising them on suitable products, answering questions, and offering general guidance on store items.
- Handle customer complaints professionally and help resolve issues promptly to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Engage with customers in a friendly, helpful, and respectful manner at all times.
2. Merchandising Standards
High merchandising standards ensure that products are presented clearly and attractively. Duties include:
- Ensuring that all bulk stock in the assigned area is merchandised safely and arranged according to the store’s official layout plan.
- Maintaining full stock levels in accordance with planograms so that customers can easily find the products they need.
- Replenishing shelves promptly when stock is received to avoid empty spaces or disorganized displays.
3. Housekeeping
A clean, organized environment is critical for both safety and customer satisfaction. Responsibilities include:
- Keeping aisles free of obstacles to allow customers to move comfortably without risk of injury.
- Ensuring that newly received stock is merchandised without delay.
- Maintaining accurate shelf price labels within the assigned department.
- Completing all required checklists for areas such as the canteen and the toilet/shower facilities when scheduled for duty.
4. Safety (OHSA) Compliance
Safety is a top priority in the store environment. The General Assistant must:
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations, including the proper use of safety gear.
- Ensure that all stock displays are stable, secure, and safe for customers and colleagues.
- Report any safety hazards or irregularities to the Store Manager immediately.
5. Managing Stock Loss
To help the store reduce financial loss, the General Assistant is responsible for:
- Identifying and reporting any damaged or expired stock within the assigned area.
- Ensuring products are handled with care and displayed correctly to prevent unnecessary damage.
