1. About the Role

The General Worker will support the activities of the Maintenance and Directional Drilling Teams to ensure that equipment remains reliable and operational at all times. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability and performance of essential machinery used within mining and industrial operations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing welding tasks, assisting artisans with equipment repairs, adhering to safety regulations, and ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Codes of Practice (COPs). The role requires physical fitness, technical accuracy, and the ability to follow structured work processes while maintaining a strong awareness of safety protocols.

Working in this environment demands discipline, teamwork, and the ability to respond quickly to operational needs. As part of the team, you will contribute to meeting production targets, reducing downtime, and supporting Sasol’s strong safety culture.


2. Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

Welding and Mechanical Support

  • Execute welding tasks on mining-related equipment using flux core welding processes and other approved welding techniques.

  • Operate welding equipment safely and effectively, ensuring compliance with all equipment usage standards.

  • Assist with oxy-fuel gas cutting and related fabrication or repair tasks.

  • Provide technical assistance to artisans during maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment inspections.

Equipment Handling and Operations

  • Support the operation of overhead cranes and lifting equipment, ensuring all safety practices are followed.

  • Handle tools, lifting accessories, and maintenance equipment responsibly.

  • Help facilitate the movement, setup, and stabilization of heavy machinery as required by the job.

Safety and Compliance

  • Conduct daily visual inspections of the workplace to identify unsafe conditions, hazards, or equipment issues.

  • Report any unsafe situations immediately to the supervisor to prevent incidents.

  • Follow all SOPs, COPs, and company safety standards, ensuring high housekeeping standards at all work sites.

  • Participate actively in daily morning meetings to review tasks, discuss safety concerns, and align with team objectives.

  • Understand and apply relevant sections of the Mine Health and Safety Act.

Operational Efficiency and Teamwork

  • Assist in controlling operational costs by minimizing waste, using resources efficiently, and supporting cost-saving initiatives.

  • Complete job-specific checklists accurately and submit documentation as required.

  • Support the team in achieving operational targets and maintenance schedules.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain smooth daily operations and promote a positive work environment.


3. Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12, N3, or NCV Level 4 qualification.

  • Subjects such as Mathematics and Science are advantageous as they support technical understanding.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license (minimum Code 08) is essential.

  • Medical certificate of fitness is required and must be valid.

  • First Aid Certificate is an added advantage and may benefit applicants working in high-risk environments.

Experience

  • A minimum of 12 months of prior welding experience is required.

  • Experience using and maintaining underground machinery such as Shuttle Cars, Roof Bolters, Crushers, or Feeder/Feeder Breakers is highly desirable.

  • Previous plant or industrial experience is advantageous but not mandatory.

  • Ability to operate MIG welding equipment is preferred.
