Job Opportunity: General Worker (Conservation Department)

Location: Golden Gate Highlands National Park – Gladstone Section (Stables)

Golden Gate Highlands National Park has two vacancies for General Workers within the Conservation Department, based at the Stables in the Gladstone Section. Successful candidates will report directly to the Field Ranger Corporal and will support conservation and stable-related operations within the park.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 (Std 10) certificate or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification

• 1–2 years’ experience in a conservation-related environment or horse riding

• Proficiency in English (spoken, read, and written); additional languages will be advantageous

• Good physical fitness (a fitness assessment will be conducted)

• Knowledge and experience in using small plant equipment such as chainsaws and brush cutters

• Basic knowledge of firefighting

• Understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS)

• Basic First Aid will be an added advantage

• Willingness to work weekends and public holidays

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in identifying and reporting horse-related health issues to Stable Supervisors or Horse Handlers

• Support horse vaccinations, feeding, grooming, and general medical care when required

• Perform general maintenance duties at the stables, including upkeep of terrain, gardens, paddocks, and surrounding areas

• Clean and maintain riding equipment such as saddles and bridles

• Assist stable staff during visitor outrides when necessary

• Support the erection and maintenance of fences

• Participate in wildfire suppression, prescribed burns, and preparation of firebreaks

• Assist with soil erosion control and invasive plant management

• Support infrastructure maintenance, including buildings, hiking trails, and signage

• Ensure strict adherence to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards
