The successful candidate will support plant operations by carrying out mechanical servicing, pump and motor maintenance, inspections, repairs, and general workshop duties. The role is critical in ensuring the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of bulk water infrastructure.
Role Overview
The Workshop Assistant supports Mechanical Technicians and Artisans with hands-on maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of pumps, motors, and related plant equipment.
This position requires a technically skilled individual with strong safety awareness and the ability to work in a demanding bulk water services environment. The role contributes directly to plant availability, operational continuity, and equipment reliability.
Minimum Requirements
Educational Qualifications

Grade 12 / Matric (essential)

N3 Certificate in Fitting and Turning
Mandatory Certification

Trade Test Certificate in Mechanical / Fitting and Turning
Experience
-
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in pump maintenance
-
Proven experience in mechanical maintenance of plant and equipment
Licensing
-
Valid Code 08 driver’s licence
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Routine Mechanical Maintenance
-
Perform daily maintenance on mechanical and auxiliary plant equipment
-
Conduct inspections to ensure mechanical readiness and plant safety
-
Monitor equipment conditions and report defects or abnormalities
2. Preventative Maintenance
-
Execute scheduled preventative maintenance activities
-
Inspect components for wear and replace parts as required
-
Assist in maintaining maintenance schedules, records, and logs
3. Pump and Motor Overhauls
-
Carry out planned overhauls on pumps, motors, and mechanical systems
-
Strip, inspect, repair, and reassemble equipment to required standards
-
Assist with alignment, reinstallation, and commissioning
4. Safety Compliance
-
Conduct safety inspections and ensure adherence to safety procedures
-
Identify hazards and implement corrective actions
-
Act as a safety representative when required
5. Fault Diagnosis and Repairs
-
Identify and diagnose mechanical failures
-
Assist in root cause analysis
-
Support repair teams to minimise plant downtime
6. Machining and Fabrication

Perform machining tasks such as grinding, milling, drilling, and turning

Assist with fabrication work when required
7. Welding and Flame Cutting
-
Carry out welding and flame-cutting tasks as needed

Support structural repairs and metalwork
8. Rigging Support

Assist with rigging and lifting operations

Support safe movement and installation of heavy equipment
9. Standby and Emergency Response
-
Participate in standby duties and after-hours callouts

Respond to emergency breakdowns to restore operations
