Introduction: General Worker Vacancy – City of Tshwane

The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a permanent General Worker position based at the Bosman Street Workshop in Pretoria Central.

This role is ideal for individuals seeking employment in municipal facilities management and workshop support services. The successful candidate will assist with cleaning, basic maintenance, and general labour duties to ensure a safe, clean, and compliant workshop environment.

The position falls within the Group Property Department, which is responsible for managing municipal facilities, office accommodation, and property-related services across Tshwane.


Job Purpose

The General Worker will perform routine cleaning and support duties within the workshop to maintain cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency, in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993).

This role supports artisans, technicians, and workshop staff by ensuring a hazard-free and well-maintained working environment.


Minimum Appointment Requirements

Education

  • Basic literacy (ability to read and write)

  • Grade 11 qualification (advantageous and recommended)

Experience

  • Previous cleaning experience in a workshop environment will be advantageous

  • Exposure to workshop tools, machinery cleaning, drain cleaning, and general labour duties will be beneficial

Physical and Screening Requirements

  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labour

  • Capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and moving heavy objects

  • Able to work in workshop conditions, including noise, dust, oil, and machinery

  • Willingness to undergo a criminal record check

  • Prepared to allow fingerprinting by Tshwane Metro Police at own cost

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Workshop Cleaning and Housekeeping

  • Sweep and clean workshop floors daily

  • Clean drains, pits, oil spills, workbenches, and surrounding areas

  • Remove waste, scrap, and debris to maintain safe walkways

2. Tools and Equipment Cleaning

  • Clean tools used by artisans after completion of tasks

  • Ensure tools are dried and returned to designated storage areas

  • Report damaged, missing, or faulty tools immediately

3. Health and Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety legislation

  • Identify and report safety hazards promptly

  • Wear prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Promote a safe working environment

4. Operational Support

  • Carry out instructions issued by supervisors

  • Assist with ad hoc labour tasks when required

  • Support smooth day-to-day workshop operations

5. Reporting and Communication

  • Report defects, hazards, or operational issues

  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and workshop personnel


Remuneration and Benefits

  • Basic Salary: R159 936 – R186 936 per annum

  • Estimated Total Package: R236 535 – R270 901 per annum
