  • CB1-1: R212 358 per annum (approximately R17 697 per month)

Job Overview

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) invites suitably qualified and committed candidates to apply for Security Officer positions at Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre in the Free State and Northern Cape Region. These appointments form part of the department’s mandate to ensure secure, safe, and humane correctional environments while supporting offender rehabilitation and enhancing public safety.

Security Officers are integral to the daily functioning of correctional facilities. The role focuses on enforcing security measures, supervising inmates, and maintaining discipline within the correctional centre. Successful candidates will be responsible for safeguarding state assets, ensuring the safety of offenders, staff, and visitors, and supporting orderly operations within correctional facilities and during external movements.

Appointments will be made across three competency levels: CB1-1, CB1-2, and CB1-3. Entry-level applicants who meet the minimum requirements may be appointed at CB1-1 level, while candidates with extensive experience in correctional services may be considered for higher levels based on years of service and demonstrated competence. These positions require disciplined, vigilant individuals who can function effectively within a highly structured and regulated environment.

Security Officers are expected to uphold ethical standards, respect human rights, and contribute positively to offender rehabilitation by maintaining a secure environment conducive to correctional programmes. The role demands sound judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to respond effectively to security-related incidents. Candidates must be able to work under pressure and strictly comply with departmental legislation, policies, and procedures.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Matric / Grade 12 qualification

  • Successful completion of Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training, or Induction Training Course (ITC)

  • CB1-1: No prior experience required

  • CB1-2: At least 10 years of relevant experience at CB1-1 level

  • CB1-3: At least 10 years of relevant experience at CB1-2 level

  • Computer literacy

  • Firearm competency

  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, policies, and operational procedures

  • Understanding of Minimum Security Standards within correctional centres

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills


Key Responsibilities

The core functions of the Security Officer role include:

  • Performing access control at correctional centres and within secured internal zones

  • Supervising and controlling the movement of offenders inside and outside correctional facilities

  • Guarding offenders within correctional centres and during placement at external public institutions

  • Conducting routine security inspections and physical checks

  • Managing security stores, equipment, and related assets

  • Operating and monitoring the correctional centre control room

  • Ensuring the safe custody, care, and control of offenders

  • Supporting offender rehabilitation through correction, discipline, and human development

  • Maintaining a secure, safe, and humane detention environment at all times
