Overview

Transnet SOC Ltd through its Rail Infrastructure Manager division is seeking to appoint a qualified Fire Fighter in Ladysmith. The successful applicant will be responsible for safeguarding lives, property, and the environment by responding to fire and emergency incidents, carrying out fire prevention measures, and ensuring that fire and hazardous materials (Hazmat) equipment remains fully operational.

The role demands strong emergency response skills, knowledge of hazardous material management, and strict compliance with safety regulations and company standards.

Position Purpose

To ensure the protection of people, assets, and the environment through efficient emergency response, proactive fire prevention, and proper maintenance of fire and Hazmat equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain constant operational readiness

• Service and maintain firefighting equipment

• Execute specialised procedures during fire and emergency incidents

• Take command of incident scenes until relieved by senior authority

• Operate and manage all fire and Hazmat equipment

• Conduct after-hours fire patrols

• Inspect dangerous goods in marshalling yards

• Perform fire and safety inspections in warehouses, cargo sheds, and related facilities

• Provide fire protection services for cargo, chemical tankers, and explosives

• Manage fire control room operations

• Monitor and inspect hot work activities

• Inspect and test fire detection, suppression, and sprinkler systems

• Conduct grain elevator inspections to mitigate dust explosion risks

• Perform hot work inspections on vessels, rail infrastructure, and depot construction sites

• Ensure adherence to governance, risk management, and legislative standards

• Carry out additional duties as assigned by authorised officials

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12

• Fire Fighter 1 (SAQA/IFSAC accredited)

• Fire Fighter 2 (SAQA/IFSAC accredited)

• Hazmat Awareness (SAQA/IFSAC accredited)

• Hazmat Operational (SAQA/IFSAC accredited)

• First Aid Level 3 or Basic Ambulance Assistant certification

• Valid Code C1 driver’s licence with PrDP

Knowledge Requirements

• Port and rail operational procedures

• Hazardous substance classification and labelling

• Fire engineering principles

• Fire safety and dangerous goods management

• Occupational Health and Safety legislation

• Harbour regulations and port rules

• Fire Brigade Services Act 99 of 1987

• Relevant SANS Codes of Practice (SANS 10090, SANS 10400, SANS 10087, SANS 10089, SANS 3000)

• Corporate policies, standards, and operating procedures
