Overview of the Role
The Driver/Messenger position plays a crucial role in ensuring that transport and messenger services for the Government of South Africa are conducted efficiently, professionally, and securely. The role is designed for individuals who can be trusted to handle both transportation of people and delivery of official documents with diligence, discretion, and care.
As a Driver/Messenger, you will be responsible for transporting government officials, staff, and guests to various destinations, ensuring both their safety and comfort throughout the journey. In addition to driving, you will perform messenger duties such as delivering confidential documents, parcels, and packages in a timely and secure manner. This dual role requires a high level of responsibility, attention to detail, and a commitment to following government rules, policies, and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Transportation Duties
-Drive government officials, employees, and invited guests to designated locations safely and punctually.
-Strictly follow all traffic regulations, road safety laws, and internal government transport policies.
-Ensure that all passengers feel comfortable and are treated with courtesy during trips.
-Assist passengers with loading and unloading luggage, packages, and other items as required.
-Adapt driving routes when necessary to avoid delays, while ensuring adherence to official travel schedules.
2. Vehicle Care and Maintenance
-Keep the assigned government vehicle clean, both inside and outside, at all times.
-Conduct regular inspections to check for maintenance needs, potential mechanical issues, and overall roadworthiness.
-Arrange and monitor regular servicing, repairs, and safety checks to keep the vehicle in optimal working condition.
-Record all vehicle-related activities, including mileage, fuel consumption, and any repairs undertaken.
3. Messenger Functions
-Collect, transport, and deliver official documents, letters, and parcels to designated offices or individuals.
-Ensure that all deliveries are handled with confidentiality, particularly sensitive or classified materials.
-Obtain signatures and proof of delivery where required.
-Keep detailed records of all deliveries made, including times, locations, and recipients.
4. Security and Compliance
-Always ensure passengers fasten seatbelts and follow all in-vehicle safety protocols.
-Remain alert to potential security risks during transportation and delivery tasks.
-Follow all security guidelines provided by government departments.
-Maintain confidentiality when dealing with restricted or sensitive information.
5. Administrative Duties
-Complete trip sheets, logbooks, and delivery registers accurately and on time.
-Submit any vehicle incident or accident reports promptly to the relevant supervisor.
-Report mechanical faults or any vehicle-related concerns immediately for repair or assessment.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
For consideration, applicants should meet the following requirements:
-Educational Requirement: Minimum of Grade 10 or ABET Level 4 qualification.
-Experience: 1–2 years of relevant work experience in driving or similar roles.
-License: A valid, unexpired South African driver’s license is essential. A Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) may be required for certain positions.
-Knowledge:
-National Road Traffic Act (1996)

-PFMA Act (1999)
-Relevant government transportation policies and circulars
Skills and Competencies:
-Strong driving abilities with proven safety record
