About the Position

Clicks is seeking energetic and service-driven individuals to join their retail teams as Shop Assistants / Cashiers across its stores nationwide. This role is an essential part of store operations and involves engaging directly with customers, handling transactions at the point-of-sale (POS), promoting the Clicks ClubCard program, and maintaining a clean, organized store environment.

Ideal candidates are those who enjoy working in a fast-paced retail environment, are comfortable handling transactions with accuracy, and can offer helpful, friendly service to customers on the shop floor.


Job Purpose

The main objective of this role is to ensure every customer has a pleasant shopping experience, whether they are seeking assistance, purchasing goods, or asking about current promotions. A Shop Assistant / Cashier plays a vital role in the customer journey by ensuring transactions are processed correctly and efficiently, while also keeping the store tidy and well-stocked.

This role combines retail, customer service, and sales functions to deliver a high-quality shopping experience.


Key Responsibilities

1. Point-of-Sale (POS) Transaction Handling

  • Efficiently operate the till and process customer purchases with speed and accuracy.

  • Ensure all scanned items, prices, and quantities are correct before finalizing sales.

  • Accept cash, card, and digital payments while following all store policies related to cash handling.

  • Issue receipts, process returns, and manage exchanges according to store procedures.

  • Reconcile the till at the end of each shift and report any discrepancies immediately.

2. Customer Service

  • Provide friendly and helpful assistance to customers at all times.

  • Answer questions about store products, promotions, and pricing.

  • Handle customer complaints or refer them to a supervisor when needed.

  • Greet customers upon arrival and thank them for their purchases, creating a welcoming environment.

  • Guide customers toward product locations within the store if they need help finding items.

3. Promotion and Loyalty Program Engagement

  • Actively encourage customers to sign up for the Clicks ClubCard loyalty programme.

  • Explain the benefits and advantages of joining the program, such as discounts, special offers, and earning rewards.

  • Assist customers with the ClubCard registration process when necessary.

  • Meet or exceed the store’s ClubCard sign-up targets.

4. Product Display and Merchandising

  • Restock shelves to ensure that products are available and displayed attractively.

  • Maintain product displays in accordance with store standards.

  • Ensure pricing labels are correct and clearly visible.

  • Assist in setting up promotional displays and signage for sales and special events.

  • Rotate stock to ensure older products are sold first (FIFO: First In, First Out).

5. Loss Prevention and Security Awareness

  • Maintain vigilance at all times to prevent theft or loss within the store.

  • Immediately report suspicious behavior to store management or security.

  • Ensure all security procedures are followed during transactions and product handling.

  • Handle customer returns and refunds according to store policy to avoid fraud.

6. Housekeeping and Store Presentation

  • Keep the sales floor, counters, shelves, and till areas clean and tidy.

  • Remove empty boxes or packaging and discard them properly.

  • Ensure change rooms (if applicable) are clean and organized.

  • Assist in general store cleanliness throughout the day, especially during peak hours.


Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate is mandatory.

  • Additional academic achievements are advantageous, especially if you have passed Mathematics and English with 50% or higher.

Experience:

  • Experience in a retail or fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) environment is preferred, but not mandatory.

  • Prior customer service or sales experience is an added advantage.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Good communication skills in English and at least one other South African language.

  • Basic numeracy and cash-handling skills.

  • Ability to use a point-of-sale system or willingness to learn.

  • Reliable and punctual with good time management.

  • Willingness to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays.

  • Ability to follow instructions, maintain attention to detail, and meet performance goals.

  • Capable of working under pressure and managing multiple tasks efficiently.

  • Enthusiastic, friendly, and service-oriented personality.

  • Team player who is also able to work independently when needed.
