As part of its mission to identify and evaluate diamond-bearing kimberlite systems, the organization operates a highly specialized Sample Treatment Centre within its Indicator Mineral Laboratory. The Centre plays a key role in the analysis of geological samples critical to exploration projects.


Position Summary

We are currently looking for a Treatment Plant Operator 3 to join our Johannesburg-based team. This position supports laboratory operations by carrying out the safe, accurate, and efficient processing of geological samples in accordance with predefined procedures and quality standards.

The successful candidate will ensure that all processing is compliant with ECOHS (Environmental, Community, Occupational Health and Safety) protocols, maintain detailed operational records, and actively contribute to continuous improvement efforts in sample treatment processes. Key Responsibilities

1. Sample Treatment and Quality Control

-Execute approved procedures to process geological samples and extract heavy (indicator) mineral concentrates.

-Apply rigorous Diamond Control protocols to ensure sample integrity and security throughout treatment stages.

-Accurately capture and record treatment data using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

-Perform tracer tests and regularly monitor plant performance through assessments like tromp curves.

-Report any deviations or non-conformances in process performance to the relevant technical leads.

-Undertake scheduled and ad-hoc plant decontamination procedures to avoid sample contamination or cross-over.

2. Plant Operation and Maintenance

-Operate across all core process units, including:

-Crushing

-Wet and dry screening

-Dense media separation (DMS)

-Magnetic and electrostatic separation

-Heavy liquid separation

-Aliquoting for analysis

-Complete pre-start equipment checks and assist in executing routine maintenance based on operational schedules.

-Follow safe lock-out and isolation procedures during maintenance or in the event of equipment failure.

-Participate in shutdown activities, ensuring full compliance with safety and procedural standards.

-Collaborate with the Project Metallurgist and Maintenance Team to escalate and resolve plant-related issues.

3. Risk, Governance and Compliance

-Display visible leadership in safety practices, reinforcing De Beers’ culture of zero harm and environmental care.

-Adhere strictly to internal protocols, including:

-ECOHS guidelines

-Risk assessment procedures-

-Diamond security standards

-Sample chain of custody rules

-Conduct risk assessments for all planned and unplanned activities and submit safety observations and incident reports.

-Keep complete and auditable records in line with internal and external quality management and safety systems.


Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Education Requirements

-Grade 12 / Matric is required.

-Mathematics at the matric level is advantageous and may enhance technical understanding.

Technical Skills

-Basic computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

-Familiarity with LIMS or similar data capture systems is preferred.

-A valid machinery operation license (e.g., Forklift Licence) is not mandatory but will be advantageous.

Relevant Work Experience

-Prior exposure to mineral processing, laboratory operations, or diamond/heavy mineral recovery is highly desirable.

-Experience in field exploration or sample preparation laboratories will be a distinct advantage.

-Candidates with hands-on knowledge of process plants or treatment units are encouraged to apply.

-Communicates clearly and respectfully, especially during shift handovers and reporting.
