Job Purpose
The Packaging Operator plays a crucial role in ensuring that production runs smoothly and efficiently by safely operating and maintaining packaging equipment in line with company standards.
You will be responsible for monitoring production lines, ensuring quality compliance, minimizing downtime, and supporting the achievement of SAB’s operational targets for safety, quality, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
As a Packaging Operator, you will be expected to perform a variety of operational, administrative, and quality assurance duties, including:
1. Operating and Monitoring Equipment

Operate both manual and automatic packaging machinery according to established standards and safety protocols.

Monitor packaging processes throughout the shift to ensure smooth operations and optimal equipment performance.

Conduct routine checks to identify potential issues and perform minor maintenance or adjustments as needed.

Work closely with maintenance teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical faults.
2. Production Planning and Execution

Interpret and execute the daily or shift production plan, ensuring timely completion of packaging targets.

Set up machines at the beginning of production runs and ensure they are operating efficiently.

Continuously track progress to ensure output meets planned production volumes and quality standards.
3. Quality and Safety Compliance
-
Maintain the highest levels of product quality, hygiene, and food safety in accordance with SAB’s policies and regulatory standards.

Conduct in-process inspections and record data to ensure consistency and compliance.

Adhere strictly to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.

Take corrective action immediately when quality deviations or unsafe conditions are identified.
4. Process Control and Data Management

Utilize SAB’s process management systems, including PIMS (Process Information Management System) and POMS (Production Operations Management System), to track performance metrics.

Identify and analyse negative trends in equipment performance or process efficiency and take proactive corrective actions.

Use OFRs (Operational Failure Reports) to record and resolve recurring operational challenges.

Complete and submit relevant documentation and reports, such as AB Reports and Daily Shift Logs, to ensure transparency and accountability.
5. Continuous Improvement and Team Collaboration

Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve equipment reliability.

Work collaboratively with team members, engineers, and supervisors to optimize packaging operations.

Share best practices and support colleagues through coaching and teamwork.

Maintain a positive, safety-first attitude and contribute to a healthy workplace culture.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the Packaging Operator position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
Education and Qualifications

Grade 12 / Matric certificate (compulsory).

Successful completion of SKAP (Skills, Knowledge, and Application Programme) within 12 months of employment.
Experience
-
A minimum of 9 months of on-the-job training in a production or packaging environment.
-
Prior experience working in an FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) manufacturing setting will be a strong advantage.
Knowledge and Skills

Good understanding of packaging processes, machinery, and operational safety.

Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Computer literacy and the ability to use process control systems (PIMS/POMS).

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Ability to work under pressure and adapt to a fast-paced production environment.
