Programme Overview

Pick n Pay is offering an exciting opportunity to unemployed South African youth through its Blockman MasterCut Apprentice to Artisan Programme. This structured learnership is designed to develop competent and qualified Meat Artisans for the retail sector. The programme focuses on building practical butchery skills, operational understanding, and customer service capabilities required to succeed as a professional blockman within a retail environment.

The MasterCut Programme is a long-term career development initiative rather than a short-term internship. Participants will receive hands-on workplace training within Pick n Pay Hypermarket stores, where they will progressively develop technical expertise in meat handling, preparation, processing, and merchandising. The programme is physically intensive and best suited to individuals who are dedicated, disciplined, and motivated to master a specialised trade.

Participants should be prepared to work in cold environments, including cold storage areas, and remain on their feet for extended periods. The programme is open to both male and female applicants who meet the minimum criteria and are committed to building a sustainable career within the Pick n Pay retail system.


Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for the programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen

  • Be an unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34

  • Be physically fit and capable of working in cold environments

  • Be willing to perform manual tasks and stand for long durations

  • Demonstrate a strong interest in food handling, meat processing, and retail operations

  • Commit to completing the full duration of the MasterCut Programme

  • Be able to comply with hygiene, safety, and operational standards


Training and Development

Successful candidates will undergo structured, on-the-job training that covers all aspects of retail butchery operations. Training will include, but is not limited to:

  • Cutting, trimming, portioning, and preparing various meat products

  • Producing sausages and other processed meat items

  • Weighing, wrapping, packaging, and labelling meat products

  • Merchandising and displaying meat products for retail presentation

  • Applying food safety standards, hygiene protocols, and sanitation procedures

  • Safely handling and maintaining butchery tools and equipment

  • Operating machinery such as band saws and meat-processing equipment

  • Managing stock rotation, replenishment, and loss prevention

  • Engaging with customers and providing product information and service
